PRIVATE FIRST CLASS GEORGE J. SMITH JR.; U.S. ARMY AIR CORPS

December 5, 1919 (New York) – December 7, 1941; 22 years old; unmarried
Father lived at 52 Tilton Street, New Haven
Unknown enlistment date
Service number 6150664
17TH AIR BASE GROUP, 18TH AIR BASE SQUADRON, SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, HI

Received the Purple Heart Medal. In the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor.

Information about Private Smith is scarce. Service number 6150664 on the interment card matches the casualty book for those killed in action from Connecticut. Not much other information found. NOTE: “T.H.” in the state block of the form, stood for “Territory of Hawaii.”  Hawaii didn’t become a state until 1950. This is the source of why his grave marker has “Hawaii” and not “Connecticut.”

PFC Smith is buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific; Section O, Plot 22.
