Jeffrey DeWitt is a 26-year United States Air Force veteran who retired in the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, the top 1% of all enlisted grades. His medals include the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with six oak leaf clusters, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal with one star, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon with Gold Border.
Born and raised in Norwalk, Connecticut, he has researched countless veterans and their stories, focusing on those who died during wartime service. He has self-published nine books in the historical non-fiction category. Five of the eight books are about veterans from Norwalk. The remaining four are about Connecticut residents who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Battle of Iwo Jima, the 99 recipients of the Medal of Honor with a connection to Connecticut, and his most recent book about the 69 heroes from Connecticut who died in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He is a member of the Board of Directors and Historian for the Iwo Jima Memorial Historical Foundation based in Connecticut. For his work for the foundation, he was selected for the 2022 Veterans Public Service Award For Excellence from Central Connecticut State University.
In 2024, he was presented with the Department of Connecticut American Legion’s Americanism Award. In addition, he was presented with the Herbert L. Emanuelson Plaque, which is awarded annually to the individual Legionnaire who rendered the most outstanding contributions to Community Service.
In April 2025, he received the Outstanding Veteran Volunteer Award from the Connecticut Daughters of the American Revolution. The award is presented to a veteran in recognition of outstanding achievement in personal, professional, and family life. Contributions of leadership, patriotism, and increased public awareness, factors in the selection.
He is a Life Member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
