Wounded in action in France. As told by family: “Served in Northern France and Rhineland where he was taken as a POW on August 13, 1944. From behind enemy lines he escaped the next day (August 14, 1944) and set out to rejoin his infantry company.  During his search for his infantry he was wounded and as he described, “I was shot in the thigh and fell face down into the mud where I laid absolutely still playing dead. Once I felt safe, I crawled to the bushes and waited for our troops to find me.”
