FAMILY: Born to Charles W. Sr. (1890-?) and Clara E. Holly Archer (1891-1963). Three brothers, Charles W. Jr. (1914-1960), Edward T. (1918-1995), and Clarence (1920-1993). Two sisters, Dorothy M. Archer Maugeri Russell (1922-1995) and Effie M. Archer McCallum (1926-2013).

CIRCUMSTANCES: Took his own life. Received on board the USS Stockton (DD-646) on January 31, 1943. It’s unclear why Seaman Archer was home on furlough right after getting on his first ship.

BRIDGEPORT SAILOR ENDS LIFE

Bridgeport, March 30 – (AP) – Seaman Walter Archer, 21, son of Mrs. Clara E. Archer of 103 Clinton Avenue, died in Bridgeport Hospital late last night after police said he drank a quantity of poison. He had been spending a furlough at his home.
