MARITAL STATUS: Married to Elaine Haakareud Santagate (1941-) on June 13, 1970, in Norwalk, CT. Elaine remarried James Dascenzo on May 7, 1994, in Stamford, CT.
CHILDREN: One son, Paul J. (1969-). Two daughters, Theresa (1972-) and Michelle (1978-).

FAMILY: Born to Antonio L. Santagati (1893-1967) and Genevieve Carsaro Santagati (1900-1980). One brother, Vincent J. (1916-1998). Two sisters, Angelina Santagate Toni (1919-1994) and Mary Santagate Maisano (1922-2001).

DECORATIONS: Received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with two service stars and the Combat Infantry Badge (CIB). Also received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds sustained in action on April 12, 1945.

Unit report or 11-12 April 1945: An enemy counterattack began at 1830. Automatic weapons fire came from surrounding hills. Light Machine guns and mortars were credited with disorganizing the attack, which was repulsed in a short time. A defensive position was put into effect by setting up outposts in three towns. Headquarters and the 1st Platoon remained in Ingersauel, setting up O.P. #1. The 2nd Platoon set up O.P. #2 at Hohn, and the 3rd Platoon returned to Stein to set up O.P. #3. The next morning, the company reorganized and advanced, clearing 4 or 5 towns, finally reaching Post Seelscheid by 1800. Total POWs: 60. Wounded: PFC Frank A. Santagate.

Frank A. Santagate, of 38 Suncrest Road, died Monday in Norwalk Hospital. He was the husband of Elaine Haakerud Santagate. Born in Norwalk on October 28, 1925, Mr. Santagate, son of the late Anthony and Genevieve Casaro Santagate, was a retired salesman with Rosenblum and Walter Co. of Stamford. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a recipient of the Purple Heart. Mr. Santagate was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Blind Veterans Association and the Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree. In addition to his wife, Mr. Santagate is survived by a son, Paul J. Santagate, stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army; two daughters, Theresa E. Santagate and Michelle Ann Santagate, both of Norwalk; and two sisters, Angeline Toni and Mary Maisano, both of Norwalk. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Matthew’s Church. Interment will take place in St. John Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave.


Buried in St. John’s Cemetery, 223 Richards Avenue, Norwalk, Connecticut. Unknown section and plot number.
